Care: Who Cares?
LeeAnn Shipowick
I couldn't sleep tonight so at 2 am, I am up writing. Sometimes my thoughts come to me in the crazed moments of insomnia. I was lying next to my daughter of 20 years young and listening to her disappointment and hurt from a boy that she cares for but his actions of late haven't displayed that his feelings matched hers. She wanted him to care and see his actions match his words. She wants to feel cared for, not just receive lip service. Lip service is something we are all guilty of at times. We say, with good intentions of course, how much we care but really caring and continuing to care is affected by many things. First, how we feel about ourselves and, second, how we feel about our environment, and then, lastly, how we see the future.
We can't truly care if we don't feel good about ourselves because when we feel poorly about ourselves, we start to spiral and soon all we can think about is ourselves and how miserable, poor, fat, skinny, over-worked, under-challenged, lonely, etc. So, first we must take a good hard look at ourselves and ask, "What is it that I need to do to feel good so I can contribute and bring my best to this environment?" The answer is simple. Things like self-care, enough sleep, exercise, getting up early enough so you can be prepared and start the day off right. When we do this, we are taking care of ourselves. We care enough to care for ourselves which makes us feel positive and contributes to the synergy and excellence we all strive for in the workplace.
Where we work and how we feel about where we work is important. Do we respect and like those around us? Our employer, our teammates? Can we count on them to truly care, too? How we see our future? I have to say that I have struggled with those questions. "Am I doing or being enough now to ensure a successful future?" "Do I see hope and possibilities?" On a bad day, those thoughts can be upsetting because as we need to plan for the future, the future comes quickly. So how can we have our present be the best? What does that look like or feel like and, mostly, do we still care?
Who cares? We need to make sure we surround ourselves with people who care; care about themselves in how they present and talk and show up. Sometimes, it's about giving the extra, even when you're not "on the clock" yet or coming to work with a great idea or an inspirational story or remembering the kindness and care of a co-worker and bringing it up at the morning meeting. We have to feel positive about who and where we work; you can't fake that. Respect and accountability to each other go a long way on the care chart.
Who cares? I do, you do. So when you feel yourself go to that place of dissatisfaction, pause, reflect and bring your best today because sometimes you just have to keep plugging along and going through the motions until it becomes who you are and what you do. What I wish for us all is to truly care and to not stop caring. I care about your success, your challenges, your ideas and who and what you want to be in this world. So don't stop thinking about tomorrow. Remember to care now and continue to bring "care" to your future and, yes, as Fleetwood Mac would say, "Don't stop thinking about tomorrow!"
