Internet and Cell Phones A dental practice requires the attention and support of all team members to function effectively and productively. Unfortunately, cell phone and internet usage (ie random browsing or answering personal emails) during office hours by all team members (including dentists) can disrupt an otherwise productive day. Here's what we recommend: During office hours, everyone must be focused on the patients and their office responsibilities Visiting social networking sites (like Facebook) and responding to personal emails is something everyone in the office should do on their own time. It is acceptable for people to access emails and the web at lunch or on breaks - but only if the dentist permits it. This is obviously a personal choice for each practice and should take into consideration security issues and resources. If you need to make or take a personal phone call, do it out of earshot of patients The idea is to have a policy on internet and cell phone usage and stick to it. Some doctors are comfortable allowing it during downtime (ie lunch) and others are not. Whatever you decide, ensure you include it in your office policy manual and make sure all team members are clear about your policies so there are no misunderstandings.
