Like society, dental practices are filled with diverse personalities. With so many different temperaments, conflict is bound to occur occasionally. Thankfully, much of the conflict we experience in practice every day is minor and harmless like, "Who took my coffee mug?" But when personality or other types of conflict start to get out of hand, the issues need to be addressed immediately.
- Encourage open communication in your practice. If staff members are able to voice ideas and suggestions openly for team discussion, a consensus can be reached - avoiding arguments.
- Treat all staff members equally. Favouratism promotes conflict and competition.
- Put your office policies in writing in a simple office manual. If your policies are firm and consistent, you will limit the climate for conflicts to grow.
- Ensure that all team members have clearly defined responsibilities. There will be overlap in some areas but each team member should know what they are specifically responsible for on a daily basis.
- Listen to your entire team. Don't let one person control your practice.
Most importantly, step up to the plate when office conflicts become too much and can't be worked out between the offending parties. As the leader, it's your job to ensure a positive atmosphere for your patients and your team.
